Step 1: Set up Google Tag Manager

It is a free tag management system from Google. It takes all the data from your website and forwards it to other leading platforms such as Facebook Analytics and Google Analytics.

Google Tag Manager allows you to easily update as well as add tags to your Google Analytics code without having to manually write code on the back end. Thus, saving you a lot of time and effort.

Let’s say that you want to know & Keep a track on how many people clicked on a downloadable PDF link. Without the help of Google Tag Manager, you’d have to go into back end and manually change all the download links to accomplish it.

First, create an account on Google Tag Manager dashboard.

SignUp/ Adding a New Account

  • Enter Account Name (eg: TechStonez)
  • Select Desired Country
  • Click Continue button, afterwords. 

Secondly, you’ll then set up a container - a bucket that contains all of the “macros, rules, & tags” for your website, according to Google.

  • Name your container
  • select the type of content it’ll be associated with(Web, iOS, Android, or AMP).
  • After adding up required information, click create & agree to the Terms of Service. You’ll then be redirected to the container’s installation code snippet.

Go to Appearance >>Theme editor >> Header.php

Inside Header file, navigate to Header tag <head>

Step 2: Create a Google Analytics account

Simple click here which will redirect your to analytics signup page and then you can easily create an account that will be linked to your specific website.

Setting Up Container 

  • Click on Sign Up
  • Enter your account details
  • Add your website name,
  • Make sure to add exact website’s URL
  • Select your website’s industry or the category it falls in.
  • Add the time zone you want the reporting to be in.

After adding all necessary information, accept the Terms and Services. After it, you will be redirected to a page which piece of code will be shown. Copy that code because this is your tracking ID.

The tracking ID is actually a string of numbers that lets google know about your website and sends its corresponding analytics data to you. A unique number that looks like ‘UA-000000-1’.

The first set of numbers (000000) is the personal account number associated with particular website and the second set (1) is the property number associated with your account for the same site. Do not share this tracking ID with anyone until you are ready to sell your site to someone else.

Once you have the tracking ID, it’s time to move onto the next step.

Step 3: Set up analytics tag with Google Tag manager

In this step, you’ll learn how to set up specific Google Analytics tracking tags for your particular website.

To achieve this, go to your Google Tag Manager’s dashboard.

Click on the Add a new tag button.

You will be redirected to a page where you find an option to create your new website tag.

Here, you’ll observe that you have two areas of your tag that can be customizable:

  • Configuration. Where the data collected by the tag will go.
  • Triggering. What type of data you want to collect.

Frist, click on the Tag Configuration button. It will let you to choose the type of tag you want to create.

Choose the “Universal Analytics” option to create a tag for Google Analytics.

After choosing universal analytics, select the type of data you want to track. Next, go to “Google Analytics Setting” and choose a New Variable… from the dropdown menu.

You’ll redirected to new window. It will field where you’ll be able to enter in your Google Analytic tracking ID. This will send your website’s data straight into Google Analytics where you’ll be able to see it later.

Once this is done, head to the “Triggering” section in order to select that data you want to send to Google Analytics.

As with the “Configuration,” click on the Triggering button in order to be sent to the “Choose a trigger” page. From here, click on All pages so it sends data from all your web pages.

After all configurations, your new tag set up will look something like this:

Step 4: Set up Google Analytics goals

You probably know the key performance indicators for your business website but Google Analytics doesn’t. Therefore, we need to setup Google Analytics goals.

That’s why comes the need of telling Google about what success looks like for your website. In order to achieve this milestone, you need to set goals.

Simply, start by clicking on the Admin button on the bottom left corner of your analytics account.

After clicking it, you’ll be redirected to another window on which you’ll be able to find the Goals button.

By clicking on Goals button, it will redirect you to a new page (dashboard) where you will be able to see “NEW GOALS”, Click on that button and you’ll then be taken to the “Goals” dashboard where you’ll be able to create a new goal.

From here, you’ll be able to look through different goal templates to see if one matches your intended goal. You’ll also need to choose the type of goal you want. They include:

  • Destination. Where you want you user to reach most. For example: If you want your user to reach out subscription page. You can enter link of that page in your destination field.
  • Duration. Mostly for AdSense sites. Setting up atleast 3-5 minutes of goal to ensure low bounce rate.
  • Pages/Screens per session. For example: You have a photo gallery site and you want to track how many screens (photo per screen) are viewedby single user.
  • Event. For Affiliate sites where you aim can be to let user click on a link or fill up a form, or watch a full video.

Step 5: Link to Google Search Console

To set it up, click on the gear icon in the lower left hand corner of the main dashboard.
